VIDEO: Watch moment Bercow ‘kicks’ Rees-Mogg while leaving Commons – Brexit latest news | UK | News

John Bercow, who is a prominent Remainer, protested his exit from the Commons as Sarah Clarke, the Lady Usher of the Black Rod ordered the Speaker of the house to leave his seat. He previously said he will stand down from his role on the current Brexit deadline October 31. But in a slowed-down version of his exit, eagle-eyed Twitter users claimed that Bercow appeared to “kick” the Leader of the House of Commons who turns to stare at Mr Bercow.

The moment has left people puzzled as to whether Mr Bercow has lashed out at the Brexiteer.

One said: “Slow motion. Did Bercow kick Jacob Rees-Mogg?”

As Mr Bercow left Remainers could be heard shouting “shame on you” at Conservative MPs while Labour MPs praised him and shook his hand as he left.

Mr Bercow said: “I will play my part, this is not, however, a normal prorogation, it is not typical, it is not standard.

“It’s one of the longest for decades and it represents not just in the minds of many colleagues but huge numbers of people outside, an act of executive fiat.

“Therefore, I quite understand, I’ve already said that Black Rod, I respect and Black Rod is doing her duty and the Queen’s Commissioners are doing their duty and I will play my part.”

Labour MPs also protested the prorogation as they held up signs in Commons with the word “silenced”.

Labour Co-op MP Alex Sobel tweeted: “The action taken by myself and other members to beseech Mr Speaker to not accede to Black Rod’s request echoes the action of members to try and prevent the speaker proroguing at the request of Charles I.

Mr Rees Mogg was accused of looking “bored” by Green Party leader Caroline Lucas who was quick to judge his body language as MPs sparred over Brexit in a heated showdown.

Ms Lucas said: “There’s been a lot of talk about democracy tonight. And the Leader of the House, who I have to say with his body language throughout this evening has been so contemptuous of this House and the people.

“And for the benefit of hindsight, the Leader of the House has been spreading across around three seats lying out as if that was something very boring for him to listen to tonight.”

But the Leader of the House of Commons gave a quick rebuttal to Ms Lucas’ comments.
