Meadowhall on lockdown: Hundreds stranded in Sheffield shopping centre after flooding | UK | News

The force’s operational support unit said on Twitter: “All roads around Meadowhall are currently gridlocked. “There is heavy flooding due to adverse weather conditions and closures are in place. Please avoid the area. Events at Meadowhall are CANCELLED. We advise only essential travel.” The unit then added: “If you are in Meadowhall, do not leave the shopping centre – await further updates.

“If you are travelling to collect people, do not attempt your journey.

“Await updates as we work to ensure safety of people in the immediate vicinity.”

The force said it had closed the nearby junction 34 of the M1 in both directions to “alleviate pressure”.

The shopping centre itself also took to Twitter.

Their post read: “Christmas Live Cancelled: Due to the adverse weather and the subsequent impact on the public transport it is with regret that the Christmas Live event has been cancelled.

“If you were planning to attend we will be in touch with regards our ticket refund policy as soon as possible.”

Shoppers were quick to comment on the post.

One said: “You knew this was going to be the outcome, the river was way too high and it should’ve been cancelled before people travelled.”

Another added: “Whoever left it this late, risking people’s lives for profit, shouldn’t be doing this job.”

A third added: “That’s really bad Meadowhall to let people travel knowing full well that event wasn’t going to be safe.”

Another said: “Should never have been left this late to cancel, lots of people travelling already!”
