Harry Potter BEATEN in NEW poll of Britain’s favourite book by THIS | Books | Entertainment

Back in 2003, the BBC surveyed the UK to discover Britain’s favourite novel. The Lord of the Rings by JRR Tolkien came out on top then, but now his old Oxford buddy CS Lewis has beaten him in a new poll, with the original Narnia book jumping up from ninth place to first. The 2019 poll of 2000 British adults carried out by OnePoll for eBay UK saw The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe beat every Harry Potter book and many more classics. Here’s Britain’s Top 10 favourite books.

1. The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe
2. The Da Vinci Code
3. Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone
4. Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland
5. Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
6. Harry Potter and Goblet Fire
7. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
8. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
9. Nineteen Eighty-Four
10. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

Interestingly, 33% of those polled voted for The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, while Dan Brown’s The Da Vinci Code came second on 30%.

Harry Potter may not have come out on top but all seven of JK Rowling’s fantasy novels did make the Top 11.

According to the Daily Mail, the poll also discovered that Brits will read an average of 696 books over a lifetime at a rate of 11 a year.

Men and women’s choices were also divided, with females preferring modern classics like The Girl on the Train, Bridget Jones’ Diary and Fifty Shades of Grey.
