The Arndale shopping centre in Manchester has been evacuated with police rushing to the scene.  Video footage showed police cars and ambulances arriving at the massive shopping centre in the city on Friday evening. Armed police are believed to have been spotted at the scene.

Greater Manchester Police in a statement confirmed they were “responding to an incident” at the Arndale centre in Manchester.

The statement, released on Twitter at 21.39pm, read: “Police are currently responding to an incident at Manchester Arndale Centre.

“There is not believed to be a wider threat to the community.

“Follow our social media channels for further updates.”

Chris Slater, a MEN reporter at the scene, wrote on Twitter: “A big group of officers just arrived at the Withy Grove entrance (opposite the Printworks).

“We’re unsure yet what has happened. Arndale staff are stood on opposite side of the street.

“They are just saying there has been ‘an incident’”.

Some online commentators claimed they had received a 555 emergency alert, claiming there had been a “major incident”.

A cordon of 600 metres is believed to have been put in place around the Arndale centre.

Other video footage appears to show a long chain of police cars and ambulances outside the shopping centre.

The Arndale is the largest shopping centre in Manchester. The multi-complex centre is home to dozens of shops and restaurants.

It comes just a week after five people were injured in a knife attack at the Arndale centre in Manchester.

A 40-year-old man, initially arrested on suspicion of terror offences, has been detained under the Mental Health Act.
